Shai Hogan, 15, of Los Angeles, California, is one of this year’s competitors in the i.Invest National Youth Business Competition. Her company, Shai’s World Cosmetics, produces a wide variety of beauty products, specializing in nailcare.

Tell us about your business.

Shai’s World Cosmetics produces a wide range of beauty products with a special focus on nailcare. Our product is unique because our nail polish is vegan and cruelty free without sacrificing quality or performance. The customer can still sparkle and shine in her own right with beautiful glitters and unique colors. It is our goal to create shades that are fun, trendy, and fashionable.

What inspired the creation of Shai’s World Cosmetics?

One day, I was playing with my mom’s make-up and she got really upset, but that was the day I discovered my passion for beauty. Soon after, she helped me start Shai’s World Cosmetics. My first product was nail polish. I realized that a large number of cosmetics contained harsh chemicals and carcinogens. Since my grandmother was a two-time cancer survivor,  I wanted to create a high-quality product that did not contain harmful chemicals.

How will Shai’s World Cosmetics impact the world?

Monthly, my company provides “Community Night” to the inner-city children of the Los Angeles area. I open the doors to entrepreneurship for young girls free of charge by teaching sessions on different business related topics to get them started with their own business. It is my goal to ignite the entrepreneurship mindset while encouraging girls that they can sparkle & shine. Ultimately, I want to teach around the globe and make an impact on young girls everywhere. I also donate nail polish to the following organizations: Love My Neighbor Foundation and the Positive Results Corporation. Love My Neighbor Foundation establishes a viable and respectable means for homeless individuals to receive the necessities of life as they regain their way back into society. The Positive Results Corporation addresses bullying, interpersonal relationships, and teen dating in youth and young adults and communities of color. Through education, they teach people to make positive decisions for their lives while building healthy relationships. I am honored to be a part of both organizations.

What are the next steps for Shai’s World Cosmetics?

Shai’s World plans to sell its products to nail salons that specialize in vegan friendly polishes, trendy boutiques, nail techs, trade shows, big-box retailers, and beauty event pop-ups. We are currently looking for both mentors and investors to help expand Shai’s World by way of sales reps and staff (mixologist). As we grow, within the next 5 years, we want to eventually explore the possibility of owning our own nail salon in the greater Los Angeles area and eventually expanding to other parts of the world.
